Green Space Access

As a child, I had the privilege of spending the majority of my days outside: swimming in the local pool, exploring the woods behind my house, biking throughout the neighborhood, and walking several blocks to visit friends. If I were to measure the hours per day I spent outdoors when I was 9 years old, it would easily be over half of the day. During my time in high school, I spent most of my time in classes, at my job, and all of my outdoor time was spent in my sports practices, competitions, and training. Fast forward several years, and the amount of time I am outside is negligible unless I intentionally build that time into my schedule: a road trip to the Badlands National Park, a day at the pool with my nieces, or a stretch of yardwork at my home.

I miss the easy access I had to green spaces in my childhood “schedule”, and part of what I miss was the organic flow of time: there wasn’t an agenda of activities, I was simply wandering and exploring the world around me. I recapture that part of myself and that connection with nature when I travel. My time is at a premium these days and I never want to lose out on the windows I do have to spend time in nature.

Demaign is my answer to that desire. We want to make it easy and accessible to explore the green spaces around us intentionally and respectfully. Having the ability to go to a cozy space by a creek for a picnic, lay out on a blanket to look at the stars or try to see the northern lights, or simply just wander in nature is a precious and dwindling resource. Let’s protect that resource for each other together.
